The Buddhist Maha Vihara (BMV) was founded in 1894 by the Sasana Abhiwurdhi Wardhana Society (SAWS), the oldest registered Buddhist Society in the Klang Valley. Since its foundation, the Sāsana Abhiwurdhi Wardhana Society has adeptly managed the temple, organizing religious activities and assuming responsibility for on-site administration. In 1962, as Malaysia took its modern form, the society was officially registered, and in 1996, its name transformed to the Buddhist Missionary Society Malaysia, with the temple serving as its central headquarters.
